On Learning New Things

Nothing will work unless you do.

— Maya Angelou

I’m writing about a character who walks up to a house.

What kind of house?

Good question.

The next two hours are dedicated to reading about Australian architecture in certain cities, eras, and designs. There was so much that I didn’t know. Terminology for types of pillars, windows, doors, fences, wall coverings, etc. The difference between internal decorations that indicated wealth, or were the fashion at the time. The whys and wherefores of renovation – or not – of heritage houses.

There is always something that you don’t know.

But there is always something you can do about it.

For the record, I settled on a Mid-Victorian two-storey house with white stucco, tin roof, double-hung windows, and cast iron balustrades and friezes on the veranda and balcony.

What is your favourite house type?

What have you been learning about today?
